Welcome to the Barony of the Sacred Stone

Whether you are completely new to the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) or an experienced medievalist relocating to Central North Carolina, welcome! We encourage anyone with a passion for living history, historic arts, research, or martial pursuits to explore everything our barony has to offer.
Recreating the history, arts, and martial traditions of the Middle Ages in Central North Carolina
What is the SCA?
The Society for Creative Anachronism is an international living history organization dedicated to researching and recreating pre-17th-century European culture and skills. Unlike historical reenactments that focus on specific battles or narrow time periods, SCA members select their own areas of study and recreation—ranging from medieval clothing, illumination, brewing, and cooking to heavy armored combat, archery, and rapier fencing.

The 3-Step “Getting Started” Guide
Step 1: Find Your Local Chapter
Our barony encompasses regional local groups called cantons across central North Carolina. Cantons host regular local meetings, fighter practices, and casual Arts & Sciences nights.
- What to wear: Normal street clothes are completely fine for local meetings!
- Getting started: Find your closest canton on our Local Chapters / Cantons page.
Step 2: Attend Your First Event
Weekend events bring members together for armored combat tournaments, rapier fencing, archery, artisan displays, classes, and formal court.
- Garb required: Events require “an attempt at pre-17th-century clothing.”
- Loaner gear available: Contact our Baronial Chatelaine beforehand to borrow loaner tunics, belts, or pouches!
Step 3: Discover Your Niche
There is no single “right” way to participate in the SCA. You can focus on martial arts, medieval illumination, cooking, woodworking, historic research, or service.
- Take your time: Explore different activities, ask questions, and follow whatever spark of history catches your interest.
